Yaya Toure says that Manchester City now need to win the Champions League to command the respect of Europe’s top clubs.
The Blues forced their domestic rivals to give them full credit last season by winning the title in style, scoring more goals and conceding less than anyone else.
But to sit at the top table with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, City now need to prove they are real contenders for the ultimate European prize.
“We need to go further and win the Champions League to get the respect of other clubs, as well as making it in the Premier League,” said Yaya, whose goal set the Blues on their way to victory over reigning European champions Chelsea in Sunday’s Community Shield.
Last season was City’s first Champions League campaign, and their lack of experience handed them a low seeding, which in turn brought a tough draw at the group stage, facing teams from the three best Continental leagues.
